Federal Skilled Worker (“FSW”) Program

Want to immigrate to Canada in less than one year? The new immigration guidelines under Canada’s Federal Skilled Worker program offer a streamlined immigration process for foreign nationals and their families.

As of February 28, 2008, the Federal Skilled Worker program has been streamlined to offer immigration status to three categories of applicants. Qualified applicants may be able to immigrate to Canada in as little as 6 to 12 months:

Category 1: Applicants with at 1 year of work experience in specific professions

  • Applicants who receive a minimum of 67 points on the FSW assessment scale and who have at least 1 year of work experience (preferably 4 years or more) in one of the following designated professions, may qualify for immigration through the new FSW program guidelines.

- Electricians (Except Industrial and Power System)
- Industrial Electricians
- Plumbers
- Steamfitters, Pipe fitters and Sprinkler System Installers
- Welders and Related Machine Operators
- Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics
- Crane Operators
- Drillers and Blasters €“ Surface Mining, Quarrying and Construction
- Supervisors, Mining and Quarrying
- Supervisors, Oil and Gas Drilling and Service
- Supervisors, Petroleum, Gas and Chemical Processing and Utilities

Category 2: Applicants with 1 year experience as students or workers in Canada

  • Applicants who have receive a minimum of 67 points on the FSW assessment scale and who have worked or studied in Canada for a period of at least one year, are eligible to apply through the FSW program.

Category 3: Applicants with guaranteed job offers in Canada
  • Applicants who receive a minimum of 67 points on the assessment scale and who are offered employment positions by Canadian employers can apply to obtain a Arranged Employment Opinion (“AEO”) from Service Canada. If the AEO is approved, the applicants can immigrate to Canada through the FSW program based on current immigration guidelines.
